How traits and personalities that dogs have can teach us about being a great salesperson

Updated: Mar 5, 2023

The old debate about what makes a great salesperson is an interesting discussion and the debate comes up often.

As I continue to test ChatGPT to better understand its capabilities, my revelation was to ask the oracle to relate a great salesperson to a particular dog breed based on characteristics.

What I was after was a comparison of the attributes of great salesperson to a particular breed of dog (i.e. a great salesperson is like a <insert dog breed> because they <insert characteristics>.

Although not exactly what I expected, this is what popped out:

Dogs are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and ability to adapt to new situations.

These same traits can also be found in great salespeople. In fact, certain dog breeds may be more naturally inclined to excel in sales due to their specific characteristics and tendencies.

Here are a few dog breeds that may make for great salespeople:

Border Collie

Border Collies are known for their intelligence and work ethic. They are highly trainable and thrive on challenges, making them great at problem-solving and adapting to new situations. These traits would serve a salesperson well in the fast-paced and constantly changing world of sales.

Labradoodle

Labradoodles are known for their friendly and outgoing personalities. They are social animals that love meeting new people and making connections. These traits would be valuable in a salesperson, who needs to be able to build rapport and establish relationships with potential clients.

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are known for their loyalty and dependability. They are hardworking and reliable, and are always willing to go the extra mile to please their owners. These traits would be valuable in a salesperson, who needs to be dedicated to their job and able to follow through on commitments.

Australian Cattle Dog

Australian Cattle Dogs are known for their stamina and endurance. They are tireless workers and are not afraid to take on a challenge. These traits would be valuable in a salesperson, who needs to have the energy and determination to persevere through difficult sales situations.

While any breed of dog can be a great salesperson with the right training and development, these breeds may have a natural inclination towards success in sales due to their specific characteristics and tendencies.

So, if you're looking to hire a top-performing salesperson, consider recruiting one of these breeds to join your team.

My choice is a toss-up between the Border Collie and Australian Cattle Dog.
