Is Business Development Training in Your 2027 Budget?

As companies begin planning for 2027, sales and business development training deserves to be more than a line item for a generic course or an annual kickoff meeting.

The most effective training programs are purpose-built around the actual needs of your sales team.

Every sales organization has different strengths and gaps. One team may struggle with prospecting and reaching decision-makers. Another may need to improve qualification, consultative selling, value creation, negotiation, or closing. Even experienced teams can drift away from the fundamentals that made them successful in the first place.

A strong development program starts by identifying individual challenge areas, then building training and coaching around those needs while continually reinforcing the fundamentals:

• Prospecting and creating new opportunities

• Reaching the right decision-makers

• Asking better questions and uncovering business needs

• Qualifying opportunities effectively• Communicating value instead of competing on price

• Managing the sales process and pipeline

• Negotiating and closing

• Building long-term customer relationships

Why train when sales are strong?

Strong results can hide weaknesses. A favorable market, a few large customers, strong inbound demand, or an exceptional salesperson can make the overall numbers look good even when the underlying sales infrastructure needs improvement. When business is strong, you have the opportunity to strengthen capabilities before you need them. It is also the ideal time to reinforce successful behaviors, develop the next generation of sales leaders, and prepare the team for the next stage of growth.

Why train when sales are weak?

When sales slow, the natural reaction is often to push harder: make more calls, send more emails, generate more activity.

But more activity doesn't necessarily fix an effectiveness problem.

Weak results are often the time to examine whether the team has the skills, processes, messaging, coaching, and accountability necessary to succeed. Training should address the root cause—not simply encourage people to do more of what isn't working.

Budgeting for 2027

As you develop your 2027 sales budget, don't focus exclusively on headcount, compensation, CRM, marketing, and lead generation. Budget for the development of the people responsible for converting those investments into revenue. Consider allocating resources for sales assessments, customized skills training, individual coaching, sales leadership development, reinforcement, and measurement of progress throughout the year.

The objective isn't simply to “conduct sales training.”

It's to build a more capable, consistent, and scalable business development organization.

Whether sales are exceeding expectations or falling short, investing in the fundamentals can help make future growth more predictable.
